Default Chart Augustus

Default Chart & Agenda August 2011seal Default Chart August 2011

From now on, Default will be doing a monthly ‘Default Picks” chart, featuring ten records we believe you can’t miss. The tracks will be handpicked by us and most, if not all, will be featured somewhere the same month on our bi-weekly show on Friday between 20:00 and 00:00 PM. We will also include an agenda featuring interesting upcoming events.

Chart August 2011

Peter van Hoesen  - Rites De Passage (Naeba Version)

Mind-blowing new release by Belgian master Peter van Hoesen on his own Time to Express imprint. The rest of the EP features equally great pieces by Donato Dozzy, Mike Parker and Convextion, making this limited vinyl only release (500 copies!) one to look out for. The entire package is worth it, a rare sight indeed.

Percy X – X-Trak 1 (Regis Remodel)

Regis takes on Percy X’s classic X-Trak 1 in a manner only he knows how. Dark yet comforting, broken beats and subtle, flowing synths are effortlessly melted into one single whole. Use wisely and it could do magical things for your set.

Puresque – 001A

Included on the upcoming Berghain 05 mix-cd host and compiler Marcel Fengler has ample reason to include this lovely pad-driven old-school sounding track by Berlin-based Puresque, a collab between Paul Brtschitsch and Mocca. Killer!

Pacific Blue – Industry PT. 1

Rough diamond alert. Pacific Blue’s first two-track EP, the maiden release of the correspondingly named Pacific Blue label, was first mentioned and promoted by Shifted. Hailing from England Shifted has remained clouded in anonymity while storming onto the techno scene only recently. So far he/she/they have shown a deserved longevity of breath. A side-project then? Another mysterious talent? Who can tell? All we know is this EP, combining the best of house and techno, delivers with a bang.

Terrence Dixon – Return of the Speaker People (Kausto’s Sudden Aphasia Remix)

New remix by Kausto a.k.a. Audioclad of Terrence Dixon’s “Return of the Speaker People” on Shanti Records. A funky, wobbly bassline combined with spacey pads and simple, elegant percussion creates a track that finds the perfect middleground between deep house and techno. Ideal set-opener.

Marcel Fengler – Thwack (L.A. Dub Corp. Remix)

What might well be the remix package of the year was released on Mote Evolver a while back and reviewed by resident Sieuwe Kooistra. We would like to especially recommend Luke Slater’s take on Fengler’s modern classic Thwack. While his A-side P.A.S. remix is a straight-on floorkiller, his L.A. Dub Corp take is the dubby alternative. Ideal for long sets and deep sections alike.

Skudge – Void (Conforce Remix)

Take one of the most interesting new names in techno, Skudge, and combine their mastery of analog machines with one of Holland’s most talented deep and dubby techno producers out there, Conforce. It doesn’t require knowledge of rocket science to understand that this remix is something special.

Darkcell – The Cures Of Asclepius (Markus Suckut Remix)

Mood-setting remix of Darkcell’s ‘The Cures of Asclepius” by Germany-based fast-rising producer Markus Suckut. Whereas Suckut’s remixes often feature sledgehammer kicks (take for instance his remix of HD Substance’s track Futurama), this one is slightly more toned-down but remains true to his signature underground warehouse type of techno. Also make sure to check out his upcoming collaborations with Jeroen Search!

Sigha – Over The Edge (Shifted Remix)

Sigha is another one of the new names in the realm of darker techno and responsible for a number of great releases so far. This EP on Our Circula Sound contains one original track and two remixes, one by grandmaster James Ruskin and one by Shifted, our pick. Perfect for creating that moment of suspense in a set, it manages to stay interesting all the way through despite the use of only minimalistic sounds.

Mark Williams – Memento EP

Recently re-released on vinyl this EP and in particular the A-side “Full Circle” has been played by Ben Klock, DVS1 and Rolando alike. Weird pitch-shifting chords and pads are driven by a collection of powerful rides and claps, giving it a distinct oldschool feeling. Definite weapon if used well!

Agenda

Rush Hour – 23/09/11 – Trouw -  Amsterdam

Skudge live, KiNK live and Tom Trago in probably the best venue around right now. Can’t miss!

Rush Hour – 24/09/11 – Doornroosje – Nijmegen

If you did somehow miss it at Trouw, you’ll get a second chance here. Skudge and KiNK, but Cosmin TRG joins in to complete the package. Perhaps even better, considering Roosje is a lovely venue indeed? That’s up to you to decide.

TodaysArt – 23 & 24/09/11 – Den Haag

Lovely festival with performances by among others Delta Funktionen, Ancient Methods, Peter van Hoesen and many more. Also features numerous expositions and concerts. Worth checking out!

UFO x Off Centre – 01/10/11 – Westerunie – Amsterdam

James Ruskin, Robert Hood and Sandwell District all on one evening. Need we say more?

ADE: Ostgut Ton – 23/10/11 – MC Theater -  Amsterdam

From Sunday at three in the afternoon until five o’clock Monday morning dancing to the Berlin sounds of Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Marcel Fengler and Planetary Assault Systems. It’s simply not going to get any better than this, period. Second room hosted by the guys from Dekmantel, organisers of the party.

That’s it for August, stay tuned for more next month!
